Hi everyone!

I was hoping that soem of you would be so kind as to help me out a bit with a drwing I’m working on. Here’s the link:

The problem is basically what it says in the description "I feel that the foreground lacks something to make this feel deeper. I
kind of want it to feel like the viewer has accidentally stubled upon
the scene. Thsi picture should be very intense and dramatic."

All suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

By simply adding some foliage that obscures some of the middle ground you could add a real sense of depth to the scene. The trees start to accomplish this but not nearly as strongly as I think You’re trying to accomplish.

Don’t be afraid to actually cover some stuff up when you do this. I know our natural instinct is to show everything we possibly can and not to hide our artwork behind anything as mundane as leaves. However, I think you’ll like the effect you get if it looks as if you’re peering through a bush, tree, or tall grass.

Dramatic lighting and shadows will also increase this effect. It will make the whole piece come to life. Since the summoner is using magic, we can assume that he is the light source. You can have some really cool effects with the foreground by making it translucent. That is to say that the light from the subject can shine through the leaves for an interesting effect.

Hope that helps. Nice work too, I can’t wait to see that colored.

That translucent effect thing sounds really interesting. I’ll make sure to see if I can work that in somehow! Thanks a lot for the advice. I’ll try to do the second sketch today.

The first thing I thought of was adding "shapes" in the fog/mist. Let me explain: I don’t know what he is summoning, but let’s assume he is summoning a dragon (just as an example). I would try to make some fog look like dragons, or dragons’ heads, as if he was "calling" them too as a collateral effect.

I’ve always liked how shapes on the mist look like, and if you add some of them on the foreground it can help adding depth. It’s something like what ChimericFire said, just without leaves (and with fog/mist being translucent by itself)

Just an idea.
